Indulge in the beauty of the sunlit moment with Thomas LaVine’s latest track, ‘Calico’.

Florida-born Thomas LaVine was raised in the small town of Blacksburg, SC, where he started to write songs from the age of 16. Having played music his whole life, LaVine has arrived at a dreamy, idiosyncratic style that plays with metaphor and association, treating “songwriting like a canvas in which to paint with many colours.” Taking inspiration from artists such as John Denver, Andrew Belle and Noah Gundersen, LaVine’s music delicately weaves emotion with sound, creating an unforgettable whirlpool of abstract images.

‘Calico’ has the soothing effects of sunlight that reach out from between the curtains; light, tentative, but steadfast in its penetrative effect, it seems to sink into your soul. An ethereal atmosphere slowly builds up in wispy layers, gradually becoming more enveloping with the addition of booming percussion, warm acoustic guitar and radiant electronic elements. As it changes gear in the last third of the track, we are held in suspense, captivated by the confessional tone of the lyrics, before finally being released back into the warm sonic pool of magic.

The love-child of Bon Iver and Tycho, ‘Calico’ is a testament to LaVine’s uncanny gift as a musical storyteller.
