Artist Alert: Askies

This week we sat down with the boys from Askies, who talked us through their ‘wonky tunes’ inspired grooves and how much of a lifesaver cheesy garlic bread can be.

Chalkpit Records - Askies

Askies are a Leeds-based indie rock band that have been merging groovy verses with all-out choruses since they met each other at university. Their debut single ‘MIRRORS’ was released in late August and has been met with resounding excitement. This year they were also shortlisted for the FutureSound Leeds emerging competition, which saw them play alongside some of Leeds freshest talent. They are soon to be heading back into the studio and we’re already eagerly anticipating their debut EP.

Can you tell us who you are, where your from, and a little bit about the music you make?

We’re Askies from Leeds. George on vocals, Josh on big riffs, Nathan on bass, and Ben on

drums as chief stick breaker.  We’d describe our sound as being boppy indie rock,

blending groovy verses with big choruses (or at least trying to).

Why did you decide to start a band together?

We all met in September of 2017 in freshers week at uni, and I guess we were very lucky

that the four of us happened to be the right line-up to form a band. We decided to book

out a practice room together, to see if anything worked, and luckily it seemed to come

together quite quickly.

Who are your biggest influences?

We all pretty much listen to the same stuff, bands like Foals, ISLAND and The Night Café

are big ones for us at the moment, and of course I think the chillis were a big one for

everyone at some point. So the sound is kind of a blend of all of that. Ben loves his

wonky tunes, so that’s where the grooves come from.

What has been your biggest highlight of this year as a band?

Being shortlisted for the FutureSound Reading and Leeds Emerging competition was a

big deal for us, and was great to play alongside some of Leeds finest bands and artists.

Releasing a single was also great, and we can’t thank everyone enough who’s given it a

listen, as it’s already done a lot better than we expected.

Do you have any exciting plans for the rest of 2018/2019 you can share with us?

We’re heading back into the studio this Autumn, to get our debut EP sorted, so

hopefully that’ll be released around new year. We also have a few gigs coming up before

Christmas, so keep an eye out for them.

Best cure for a hangover?

If you get a Little Oven Takeaway on the way home from a night out, then it’s proven that

you won’t have a hangover in the morning. We’d recommend the cheeseburger deal or the garlic bread and cheese. Absolute life savers.

What new bands are you listening to at the moment?

We love Scarletts, Velvit and Loux, all top bands.

Dream gig?

It has to be playing at Glastonbury in that sunset slot, we’d all be happy to slap on some factor 50 if we got to play that.

Describe your sound in three words?

Explosive Boppy Riffs.
